The frame drum section is updated. There is a lot of new information in this section of the Music pages. There's a lot more information abbout frame drums and there's a wealth of new rythyms now with notation more specific to the frame drums like the Riq, Daf, and Tar as opposed to a copy of the common tabla rhythms that used to appear with this section. Happy holidays to those of you who have celebrations right now and happy reading, I hope you enjoy these new pages.

The 'About Middle Eastern Music Section is completely finished! That brings us to about 40% completion of phase III of the website renovations. It's been a long process but I'm very happy with the new pages and their expanded content. This portion of the Music section is for learning (as the name so subtly suggests) about Middle Eastern music. There are three pages in this section.

The first is a list of Middle Eastern musical genres. The list is probably the most extensive list of Middle Eastern musical genres you will find on the web. Right now the page is mostly a list but after the main phases of the website remodel are completed we'll be adding a page for each genere individually (linked from this list) which will contain information on the genre. It will give examples of the music, any dances that are generally performed to it (or if dancing to it is not approptiate) as well as popular artists in the genre.

The second page is all about the structure of Middle Eastern music. This page is only a brief introduction meant to simplify the concept to make it easier to understand this complex musical form. It also links to several informational links to let you read more if your ready for it.

The third page is about Musical Trends in Middle Eastern music which follows it from what we know about 13th century Medieval Arabic music through colonialism, nationalism, and westernization/globalization. It's sort of a condensed history of Middle Eastern music. It contains music videos (or audio set to video/stills) to show examples of the overall influences and trends.

So be sure to check out the new pages under the Music section.

They usually happen in clusters. Well today, I finally finished off the Zills portion of the Music section. I'm happy to announce the new and improved zills section contains a more detailed history of zills, better care instructons, and expanded zilling patterns and playing tips. The new zill patterns are written out to let you count out the patterns using numbers, right/left hand alternation, and mnemonic phrases. In addition each pattern has notes on which rhythms it works well with. The only thing I didn't finish and decided I could update slowly over time is adding videos of the playing patterns. Unfortunately there aren't that many decent quality videos freely available to embed so, when I find them I will update the page. To view our newly updated zills section click on any of the following links

There are several videos as well more detailed information about it's distinguishing features. It is a unique style of dance from southern Iran along the coastal harbors or ports. Bandar in Farsi means "harbor/port" and Bandari is a fusion of dance styles from the Middle East especially the gulf region, North Africa, India, and of course Persian dances. It's similarities to bellydance have earned it the nickname Persian Bellydance but it is considered a local folk dance disticnt from other bellydance styles and traditions. Unfortunately I didn''t find many on0line video tutorials but I did post a few videos with tips for floorwork in general and I did find demonstrations fora few specifc movements. The good news is that I revised and expanded all the movement description so they are more detailed and should be able to better help you learn the movements despite the lack of video. I hope you all enjoy it! The next step is to conver the veil work and props sections. I had hoped to finish the entire movement section by the end of February but it looks like it will probably be early March. Oh, well, quality takes time and I'd rather take extra time to provide really high quality content than than rush through it to meet a self imposed deadline ;) Phase III (the Music section) will be coming up soon so make sure to check back frequentlty I've got some great updates coming for the music section.

I've converted most of the pages and now there's only two left that need to be updated and converted. The "Kneeling Moves" page and the "Lying on Back" page will be updated soon. I just finished up two more of the pages in the section though the "Lying on Side" and "Other Floor Work" movement pages are all ready to go. They have had an extensive overhaul. Most of the descriptions were vague and didn't really offer much concrete help. So I fleshed them out, trying to really give as detailed descriptions as I could. There aren't a lot of tutorial videos out there (at least not on-line) for floorwork so unfortunately there weren't many videos added to the section but I did manage to find a tutorial for the Cleopatra and for knee spins which is also a new movement that I added to the "Other Floor Work" page. To check out the new pages click below

This is an exciting year for Middle Eastern Dance as were opening up our on-line classes. We're currently in the beta-testing stage (thank you to everyone who volunteered to help with beta-testing) and will hopefully be opening the classes to the public this summer. Keep watching for updates on course information. Besides the history class that is currently going I'm working on developing several other types of on-line supplement classes as well. Additionally now that I'm mostly done with the course I can get back to updating the rest of the site so as a New Years treat I've just finished updating the hip lifts page and I added two new movement desriptions as well as three video tutorials to it. Enjoy! Keep an eye out for more updates I'm hoping to get phase II completed by the end of February which means all of the movements pages and props pages (including things like veil work, floorwork, cane, and sword) will be updated to the new look and hopefully have lots of video demonstrations to help you visualize the descriptions. This year will be busy with updating the site and adding new features and information so I hope everyone has a great year and continues to benefit from all of the information here on the site.
http://www.middleeasterndance.net/index.html?entry=last-chance-for-beta-testingLast chance for beta testing! Sign-up soon!!!Cassandra2011-12-11T10:10:57-06:002011-12-11T10:10:57-06:00**This is the last chance to sign-up to be one of the beta testers for the new on-line course.**

Middle Eastern Dance University (MEDU, s division of Middle Eastern Dance.net) will be entering it's beta testing phase starting January 1, 2012. Anyone interested in being a beta tester should contact me by December 31, 2011. Requests made after 11:59pm on 12/31/11 will not be accepted. This is an opportunity to take the class for free in exchange for testing it and reporting any bugs. Just visit the Educational section of this site and click on the beta testers link to read more or contact me using the contact button to the left.
http://www.middleeasterndance.net/index.html?entry=beta-testers-neededBeta Testers Needed!Cassandra2011-09-27T03:38:26-05:002011-09-27T03:38:26-05:00There's a lot of new changes going on here at Middle Eastern Dance and it's not just the look and organization of the site. New and improved content is being added in as the site is updated page by page. The styles of dance section was one such addition but there's more! Another really cool addition to the site will be on-line classes. These classes will be like continuing education for bellydancers. The first course being introduced will be History of Middle Eastern dance 101: Ancient Origins. Before the course opens to the public it needs to run through a series of beta testing. Beta Testers will get an opportunity to take the course for free in exchange for offering feedback and reporting issues with course managments software and materials. If your interested you can apply through the educational section of this site or send me an e-mail if it's not working yet. The beta testing will begin in January 2012 but I need to get testers lined up and added to the roster before we can begin. I'm looking for a variety of people but this does require a commitment and requires actually taking the class and doing the work in it as well so only apply if you can commit to it and actually want to take an opportunity to learn.http://www.middleeasterndance.net/index.html?entry=phase-ii-progress-and-sitePhase II progress and site updatesCassandra2011-09-22T11:34:40-05:002011-09-22T11:34:40-05:00Well everyone, Phase II of the sites restructuring and updates are at about 30% meaning most of the movements pages are done. The majority of the left over pages are the specialty pages on using props. Some of those pages will not take much time to convert because they do not all have or require the video demonstrations meaning they can be quickly converted to the new look. Most of the broken links should be fixed in this section now but if your having trouble from a page in the old site style make sure you are using the side navigation buttons instead of text links. I also wanted to make sure everyone knows that although the directories are still working they 1. are not currently linked to the main page and 2. No new submissions will be added until I start updating that section. So if you've submitted a form to be entered in the directory or if you have requested changes please be aware that it will be a longer wait than listed to get those changes made. The updating of the site is my first priority right now. Also, if there is anything that the site does not have that you would really like to see on it now's the time to make such suggestions since I'm moving things around and adding in new things. I'd love to hear from the sites users what they really want to see here.http://www.middleeasterndance.net/index.html?entry=phase-i-of-restructuring-isPhase I of restructuring is complete!Cassandra2011-08-22T00:53:07-05:002011-08-25T10:52:23-05:00
You may have noticed that the main page of Middle Eastern Dance.net has changed! This is our new look and format that will be gradually applied in phases to the rest of the site. Our new navigation menus are along the top of the page just under the banner. I have officially finished re-organizing the structure of the Before you begin section and it's sub pages. You'll notice a new set has been added to this section about styles of dance. I do currently have two styles linked up and pretty much ready to go but the rest will get up there eventually (probably after I finish updating everything to the new structure and look). All of the links should be correctly reconfigured in that section so if you had something bookmarked there you could now re-bookmark it under it's new url so that you can access it easily. It won't be changing for a long time now. Next up is the Movements section. This is Phase II and I expect it to take a long time as it's got a lot of pages in that section. Good news is that as each page is updated you may find new instructional videos and information so be sure to check back frequently!
http://www.middleeasterndance.net/index.html?entry=things-look-differentThings look different?Cassandra2011-08-20T03:10:18-05:002011-08-25T10:53:36-05:00
If you've been to Middle Eastern Dance.net before you probably are wondering "what the heck has happened here?" well... I decided it's time to restructure and update the look of the site. With about 400 pages on this site you can imagine how difficult it can be to find and update things on a regular basis. This is why the site needs a little more organization and restructuring. I hope it will make it easier for me to update and improve the site. In addition, since I'll be going through each page and editing and moving things I also concluded that this would be an optimal time to update the look of the site as well. It's had the same look for over 10 years and while it got many compliments when it was new, let's face it modern sites are much more slick so I hope the new look will go over well. You will probably notice that links are changing and not every page has yet been updated so please update your bookmarks frequently and check back to see what's new.
